Pace and process in the emergence of animal husbandry in Neolithic Southwest Asia

چکیده
Discussions of animal domestication in Southwest Asia often describe a homogenous process in which sheep, goats, cattle and pigs were domesticated in relatively rapid succession producing a productive and integrated ‘barnyard complex’ which then helped fuel the rapid expansion of Neolithic farmers into neighboring regions. A critical examination of the data, however, suggests that the development of systems of animal husbandry took place over several millennia and followed markedly different trajectories in different regions within Southwest Asia and even at neighboring sites. In this paper I explore the development of the Neolithic ‘barnyard complex’ with an emphasis on its long gestation period, regional and local scale variability, and the importance of local context and histories in the construction of heterogeneous Neolithic animal economies.

From Pleistocene to Holocene: the prehistory of southwest Asia in evolutionary context
In this paper I seek to show how cultural niche construction theory offers the potential to extend the human evolutionary story beyond the Pleistocene, through the Neolithic, towards the kind of very large-scale societies in which we live today. The study of the human past has been compartmentalised, each compartment using different analytical vocabularies, so that their accounts are written in...
متن کاملA Micromorphological Analysis of the Neolithic site of Mahtaj, Behbahan Plain
One of the long-lasting discussions concerning early Neolithic sites in the Iranian plateau deals with the issue of seasonal or permanent settlements that is directly related to level of human mobility during this period. It is noteworthy that this time period coincided with earliest signs of sedentary life style and domestication of some species of animal and plants. What kinds of activities w...
متن کاملSpread of domestic animals across Neolithic western Anatolia: New zooarchaeological evidence from Uğurlu Höyük, the island of Gökçeada, Turkey
The zooarchaeological research presented here investigates Neolithic and Chalcolithic (ca. 6500-5000 cal. BC) animal exploitation strategies at Uğurlu Höyük on the Turkish island of Gökçeada in the northeastern Aegean Sea. Toward this end, we first discuss the results of our analysis of the zooarchaeological assemblages from Uğurlu Höyük and then consider the data within a wider regional explan...
متن کاملArchitecture, sedentism, and social complexity at Pre-Pottery Neolithic A WF16, Southern Jordan.
Recent excavations at Pre-Pottery Neolithic A (PPNA) WF16 in southern Jordan have revealed remarkable evidence of architectural developments in the early Neolithic. This sheds light on both special purpose structures and "domestic" settlement, allowing fresh insights into the development of increasingly sedentary communities and the social systems they supported. The development of sedentary co...
متن کاملCitrus Co-Products in Ruminants Feeds: A Review
The generation of co-products continues at an accelerating pace, driven by population growth. Many of these co-products can be included in ruminant feed, which has the ability to transform them into good quality animal protein, and also help to reduce the disposal of undesirable residues to the environment. One of the co-products with potential use in animal feed, the citrus pulp, represents re...
